Hearing loss may not be as common as weight and acne problems, but they are as serious as blindness and heart ailments. Being able to hear clearly is very vital to us if we are to live life normally and enjoy it because it is one of the blessings of being human. Remember that it is one of the five senses that we have. Without it, we will not be able to communicate effectively with others. It is also difficult to balance our body when we have this problem. Aside from these, we are also more prone to accidents for we might not be able to hear warnings, not to mention the embarrassment it can cause. Quite often hearing problem occurs during childhood due to ear infections that cause long-term damage to the middle ear. Some ear infections cause only temporary hearing difficult or loss, while a series of ear infections can cause permanent damage. Disorders inherited can involve the improper development of the auditory nerve, inner ear, or other important area of the ear.
Causes:
Hearing loss can occur through many different means, but it should also be remembered that if the mind is focused on other things, the ears will not always necessarily hear. This thought comes along the lines of what often is referred to as “selective hearing”. Many use the term jokingly, but any level of hearing problem can be frustrating to not only those suffering from it, but those who are trying to verbally communicate with them. There is help to improve hearing loss at any level.
Types of hearing loss:
1. Conductive hearing loss: it is a problem with the part of the outer or middle ear. Most patients with conductive hearing loss have a mild hearing loss and it is usually temporary because in most cases medical treatment can help. It could be when one has middle ear infections, collection of fluid in the middle, blockage of the outer ear (by wax), damage to the eardrum by infection or an injury.
2. Sensory hearing loss: This happens when the cochlea is not working correctly because the tiny hair cells are damaged or destroyed. Depending on the loss, a patient may be able to hear most sounds (although they would be silent); only some sounds; or no sounds at all. Sensory hearing impairment is almost always permanent and a patient’s ability to talk normally may be affected.
3. Mixed (conductive and sensory combined) hearing loss: this happens when the outer and middle ear is affected and also the tiny hair cells are damaged. This is a very critical case and cannot be cured fully.
4. Neural hearing loss: This happens when there is a problem with the connection from the cochlea to the brain. Neural means related to nerve, so neural hearing loss means the nerve that carries the messages from the cochlea to the brain is damaged.
